Do you need a car?

A rental car offers flexibility on the Riviera, in mountain areas and on multi-stop trips. For a short stay in Tirana or a straightforward journey between major towns, a bus, taxi or transfer may be easier. Think about where you will actually use the car.

Choose the right vehicle

A standard car is sufficient for many main roads and larger towns. Remote mountain roads, gravel tracks or winter conditions may require higher clearance or four-wheel drive. Never take a rental car onto a road prohibited by the rental agreement.

Check the agreement

Read the terms for excess, deposit, theft cover, glass and tyre damage, extra drivers, mileage and roadside assistance. Get written permission for cross-border travel. Photograph the vehicle and record existing damage before leaving the depot.

Driving style and road conditions

Traffic can feel busy and unpredictable. Mountain and rural roads may be narrow, uneven, poorly lit or lack barriers. Allow more time than map distances suggest and avoid unfamiliar mountain roads after dark.

Rules and accidents

A Swedish driving licence is valid according to Sweden Abroad. Wear seatbelts, follow posted limits and never drink and drive. If there is an accident, remain at the scene and contact the police; do not move the vehicle unless an immediate hazard makes it necessary. Keep the rental company’s assistance number handy.

Plan driving days realistically

Build in breaks and avoid combining long mountain drives with several sightseeing stops. Check weather, roadworks and local conditions before driving to Theth, Valbona or other remote areas.
