General safety
Albania can generally be visited with normal precautions, but theft, pickpocketing and minor scams do occur. Keep valuables secure, do not leave bags unattended and take extra care in crowds and poorly lit areas.
Traffic is a major everyday risk
Road safety is one of the most important risks for visitors. Drive defensively, wear seatbelts and avoid night driving on rural and mountain roads. Do not assume drivers will stop at pedestrian crossings.
Health and drinking water
Healthcare quality and access vary, particularly outside larger towns. Take travel insurance that covers medical care, planned activities and medical evacuation. Sweden Abroad advises against drinking tap water; bottled water is the safer choice.
Demonstrations and local advice
Avoid demonstrations and large political gatherings. Follow local authorities’ instructions and check current travel advice before and during your trip.
Emergency numbers
112 is the general emergency number. Ambulance: 127; fire service: 128; police: 129. Sweden Abroad also lists 126 for traffic police. Save the numbers on your phone and be ready to describe your location clearly.
Swedish travellers
Read the latest Sweden Abroad travel advice and consider registering your trip with the Swedish List. In a serious incident, contact your insurer and Swedish consular services as appropriate.
